HERE IS WHY YOU SHOULD GO TO KICKSTART HEALTH & WELLNESS EXPO ON JUNE 3RD!
Black Girl Health (BGH) is an organization with a divine purpose. We educate and empower women to take control of their health versus being controlled by their health issues. We are proactive in our cause and specific in reach. We target minority women and stress that ALL women champion behind the movement to increase health awareness among women of color.
WHY? Because compared to non-black females, African Americans have more disease, disability and are dying at disproportionate and overwhelming numbers of health issues. African-American women have the highest rates of being overweight and obese compared to other racial groups in the United States. According to the Women’s Health Office of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, about 4 in 5 African-American women are overweight or obese. Similarly, African Americans also have higher rates of diabetes. Not to mention heart disease & stroke is the No. 1 killer in women, also disproportionately affecting African-Americans.
Black Girl Health recognizes that in order to change behavior, you have to meet people where they are. So, for the last three years, our organization has used social media campaigns and multimedia platforms to educate women and girls on how to take preventative steps to live healthier lifestyles. These steps are related to nutrition, exercise, beauty and spiritual empowerment. BGH, founded by WGAL television journalist Porcha Johnson, started as a blog telling stories of women’s health struggles and journeys of resilience, and giving expert and medical advice on weight management, nutrition, beauty tips, etc. Now, it’s grown to be a national digital outreach organization that helps to promote health-related messages targeting minorities. On Saturday, June 3rd at 8 a.m. at the Hilton Harrisburg Hotel, BGH is taking its digital platform and making it a real-life experience to help women/girls kickstart their new health goals into gear. It’s the Kickstart Health & Wellness Expo.
Kickstart boasts several celebrities in attendance this year, including 2016 Miss USA Deshauna Barber. Miss USA, a captain in the United States Army Reserves, champions awareness of mental health issues impacting soldiers, specifically post-traumatic stress disorder. Also in attendance will be Ernestine Shepherd, world’s oldest active female body builder known for transitioning from a sedentary to legendary lifestyle; Selena Watkins, recently named Women’s Health Magazine‘s Next Fitness Star; world celebrated 2008 Olympic Silver Medalist, Hyleas Fountain; and live hair demonstrations by popular natural hair guru Temitope Adesina, aka Naturallytemi. All are amongst the highly sought after line up of guest celebrities attending Kickstart 2017 as part of a live talk show called BGH LIVE.
In addition, Kickstart’s itinerary includes nutrition workshops, hair and beauty demonstrations, fitness classes, informational sessions with the experts and free health screenings, including HIV testing. With groundbreaking, modern means for continuing HIV awareness and education, BGH aims to decrease and support efforts to eliminate HIV transmission, utilizing social and digital media to educate women.
