Pause and Refresh

By  |

It is time to celebrate summer in the city! Have you noticed? Everything looks different lately, as the city and surrounding communities radiate with life and vitality. People are out and about, festivals are happening and time outside is less about getting from here to there and more about savoring ordinary moments.  Something happens when windows are opened, and temperatures rise.  People take time to talk with one another, and community takes on a whole different feel.

Think about the difference between a blustery day in January, and the last few weeks. The dormancy of nature has burst forth with new life and invitations to take it all in.  At this time of year there is a tendency to stretch ourselves into new ways of being, connecting with friends and family while cultivating healthy habits and lifestyle.  There are opportunities all around us to enjoy the arts, recreation, exercise and the simplicity of eating a meal outside and breathing in fresh air. How wonderful it would be if we could remember these moments, and live them throughout the entire year.  Maybe we can. We reap what we sow.

In each moment we are given a choice in how we will respond to all that life offers.  It may not always seem apparent, but regardless of what is happening around us, there is space for us to pause, refresh and reconnect to a place within ourselves that always delivers a deeper experience. Think about breathing in a summer day, fresh flowers, the scent of pines, or soil in a garden. Remember the sounds of music playing at an outdoor concert, children splashing in water, or fans cheering at a baseball game.  Recall a moment of connection sharing a meal, glass of ice tea or chilled lemonade with a colleague. Notice how a simple thought can take us into memory and sensation.  Our experience is enhanced with each new experience we allow in our lives.

This summer, take time to slow down and breathe in the space between the words – the space between breaths.  Step out of ordinary routines and allow the present to be extraordinary.  Take in the sights, sounds, tastes, smells and energy of new experiences, and people, savoring the gifts of the city. Know that you are investing in yourself and will receive the fruits of your labor throughout the year. Enjoy!
