The Appell Center has kicked off a new, monthly Black Film Series – a course of films that celebrate the culture of the African-American and Black communities. By partnering with local African-American and Black community leaders, the Appell Center aims for the Black Film Series to entertain, educate and bring together diverse groups of moviegoers. The series kicked-off in March with a double-feature of The Wiz and Dreamgirls, and continues each month with classics including Love and Basketball, Claudine, Southside with You, and a special Free First Friday Family Film screening of Akeelah and the Bee. Special thanks go to presenting sponsor M&T Bank, and the Cultural Alliance of York County for naming the Black Film Series a recipient of a 2019 Creative Impact Grant Award.

Why a Black Film Series in York?

York has not yet had a series that regularly showcases historical works and stories of Black and African-American filmmakers and actors. The Appell Center aspires to showcase a wider range of Black films. It aims to make the Black community feel more welcome and expose the non-Black community to more diverse perspectives.

Why now?

The Black Film Series – along with a new Spanish Language Film Series – is the result of various factors coming together: an Appell Center commitment to invite and welcome all audiences, a renovated Capitol Theatre seeking to diversify its programming, and an interest from the Black and African-American communities to build a film series in York.

Why the name: “Black” Film Series?

After a significant conversation with our volunteer coalition, conclusions were that African-American only described a portion of the target audience. The Black Film Series aims to showcase films about American experiences and others as well, celebrating their cultures and communities.
