You probably know someone with kidney disease. They may be on dialysis at home or in a center. They may have had a kidney transplant, or they may need of one. The Kidney Foundation of Central Pennsylvania (KFCP) has spent the last forty years working to support, educate, and advocate for families living with chronic kidney disease. Located in Harrisburg, the KFCP has a service area of twenty eight counties from the New York to Maryland borders.
Kidneys are essential organs to good health, but we seldom think about them when they are working as they should. It is when they don’t work well or at all, that we pay attention. Without adequate kidney function or an alternative like dialysis, people die.
In Dauphin County alone, there are over 500 people whose lives depend on dialysis treatments every day. The current alternative to dialysis is a kidney transplant, and the good news is that kidneys are one of the few organs that can be donated by a living person. This math is simple and live saving. You only need one functioning kidney to live. Living kidney donation means that two people can live their best lives!
The Kidney Foundation of Central Pa is on a mission to share the good news of living kidney donation, especially to the communities of color, who are impacted in higher numbers by the burden of kidney disease, but receive a smaller percentage of kidney transplants.
Although technology has not advanced to the point of developing an alternative kidney, the choices for living donation have expanded. Direct donations, paired exchange, and a new voucher program provide a variety of options for people interested in donating a kidney to a family member, friend, or just someone in need.
